Shopify Templates: How to Edit, Create, Preview, Apply and Manage Templates?

Shopify templates are a collection of  pre-designed sections that give your online store look consistent across all pages. The sections available in your templates depend on the theme you're using. Using the theme editor, you can discover which templates are used on specific pages and easily customize the content to suit your needs.

When you edit a template, the changes you make will apply to all pages using that specific template. For example, if you add a newsletter signup form to a collection template, it will appear on all collections pages that use the default collection template.

You have the freedom to create up to 1000 templates in total, allowing you to tailor your store's appearance precisely to your liking.

How to Edit Templates?

With Shopify's template editing, you have the flexibility to add sections to your online store, improving its overall look and feel. While some sections offer customizable blocks, not all sections or blocks can be edited. As you make changes to your templates, you'll see them in real time through the theme preview window.

Keep in mind that if your screen is larger than 1600 pixels wide and your browser window is fully expanded, or at least 1600 pixels wide, two sidebars will appear. The left-hand sidebar contains the navigation panel, and the right-hand sidebar contains the setting panel, providing easy access to your store's customization options.

Steps to Edit Templates:

On Desktop

  1. Navigate to Online Store>Themes within your Shopify admin.
  2. Click Customize on the theme you wish to modify.
  3. Activate the dropdown menu positioned at the page's upper portion.
  4. Select the preferred template for editing from the dropdown menu.
  5. Press + Add section and choose a new section for your template.
  6. To view its settings and alternatives, click on the newly added section.
  7. Modify the section or the blocks within it as per your requirements.
  8. Click Save to save your changes once you're happy with the section.

  1. Tap on Store from your Shopify app.
  2. Tap Online Store in the Sales channels section.
  3. Proceed to tap Manage themes.

How to Create a New Template?


Certain template types, such as collections, products, blogs, blog posts, and pages, allow you to display multiple pages on your store using the resources available. Each theme comes with a default template for each type, which your resources will use if you haven't set an alternate template.

It's essential to keep in mind that any changes you make to a template will impact all pages using that particular template. However, if you want to show specific pages differently, you can create a new template based on an existing one from your theme. The new template will automatically include the same sections, giving you the freedom to customize them by adding, removing, or hiding sections without affecting other templates of the same type.

Note: The option to create a new template is only available for Online Store 2.0

Steps to Create New Template:

On Desktop

  1. Go to Online Store > Themes from your Shopify admin.
  2. Locate and select the theme you wish to modify, then click on Customize.
  3. Expand the dropdown menu present at the top of your page.
  4. Choose a template from the dropdown menu. Click on + Create template.
  5. Assign a unique name to your template.
  6. Use the Template drop-down menu again and choose the existing template you want to base your new template on..
  7. Finally, click "Create template" to save your changes.

Keep in mind that templates are assigned to individual pages or products. You can create and edit templates using the theme editor, but you change the assigned template for a specific page or product in your Shopify admin. The best part is, you can have multiple templates for your pages and products, allowing you to customize their appearance to perfection.

Please note that you can only preview pages and products that are currently active in your Shopify admin.

How to Preview an Alternate Template?

You can preview a different template for your pages or products to see how they will look before making any changes.

Steps to Preview Alternate Templates:

On Desktop
  1. Go to Online Store > Themes.
  2. Find the theme you want to edit and click on "Customize".
  3. Open the drop-down menu at the top of the page.
  4. Use the "Template" drop-down menu to select a template.

How to Apply a New Template?

You have the flexibility to change the assigned template for various sections in a published theme, including pages, products, collections, blogs, and blog posts. To do this, head to your Shopify admin. The available template options will be based on the templates currently active in your live theme.

For products and collections, you can assign templates individually for each item, or you can use the Bulk editor to apply templates to multiple items at once. Please note that this process is done outside the theme editor, making it easy and efficient to manage your templates.

How to Rename a Template?

  1. Go to Online Store then Themes from your Shopify admin dashboard.
  2. In the chosen theme with the template you wish to rename, click the ... button and select Edit code.
  3. Within the code editor, locate the templates folder. Click on the template you intend to rename, then select Rename file.
  4. Provide the new template name and hit Rename file to finalize your changes.

How to Delete a Template?

  1. Navigate to your Shopify admin, then select Online Store followed by Themes.
  2. Identify the theme from which you wish to delete a template, then click the ... button followed by Edit code.
  3. Once in the code editor, locate the templates folder. Choose the template that you aim to delete, then click on Delete file. Note that any resources linked to this template will display with the default template until you assign another.
