Shopify 3D modeling and AR: a guide to hiring the right 3D modeler

3D modeling builds a true-to-scale digital copy of a product that shoppers can turn and zoom on your product page, then open in augmented reality to see it in their own space. It is most useful for items shoppers find hard to size up from photos, like sofas, lamps, shoes and glasses. This guide explains what the work involves, what drives the price, how a project runs and how to choose from the 3D modelers listed above.

What is 3D modeling for a Shopify store?

A 3D modeler builds a digital model of your product from photos, measurements or CAD files, then adds materials and textures so it matches the real item. Shopify accepts GLB and USDZ files as product media and creates the other format for you. Themes that support 3D, including Shopify's own, show an interactive viewer in the product gallery, with a button that opens the model in AR: AR Quick Look on iPhone and iPad, Scene Viewer on supported Android phones. The model must be built at real scale, or AR will show the wrong size.

How much does Shopify 3D modeling cost?

None of the 0 developers listed for Shopify 3D modeling and AR publishes a starting price yet, so ask for a quote. The price depends on each product's shape and materials, the level of detail, how many variants need their own model or textures and whether you supply CAD files or only photos.

FAQs

Does my Shopify theme support 3D models and AR?
If you use one of Shopify's own themes, yes: they show 3D models in the product gallery and can open them in AR. Many paid themes do too, but check the theme's documentation or upload a test model before you commission a full catalog. A custom or older theme may need a developer to add Shopify's model viewer and AR support.
Can one 3D model cover all my product variants?
Often, if the variants differ only in color or material. The modeler can reuse the same shape with separate texture sets and export a file for each finish. Different sizes or shapes usually need their own models. Each file is added as separate product media, so ask how each model will be matched to its variant, which may need theme or app support.
Will 3D models slow down my product pages?
They can if the files are heavy. Many themes show a preview image and load the model only when a shopper opens it, but large textures and dense geometry still make it slow to appear on phones. Shopify optimizes very large uploads automatically, but ask the modeler to keep geometry and textures lean from the start. Test the finished page on a phone over mobile data.
Why do prices differ between developers?
Each developer sets their own price and scope. Differences usually come from team size, how much planning they do before they start, delivery speed, and how long they support you after launch.
What do I need to get started?
Collaborator access to your Shopify admin, your brand assets, and one point of contact on your side.
What if I'm not happy with the work?
Revisions, milestones and what happens if you don't approve the work are agreed directly between you and the developer. Settle them in writing before work starts. ShopDigest doesn't handle payments, so check the developer's terms before you pay.
Can I switch developer after booking?
Your agreement is with the developer, so switching depends on the terms you agreed with them. ShopDigest doesn't take or hold payments, so any refund is between you and the developer. You can contact other developers on this page at any time.
About ShopDigest

The Shopify ecosystem, shown through the work

ShopDigest is an independent directory of Shopify work. Developers, agencies and experts publish the projects they’ve actually shipped — migrations, rebuilds, custom apps, headless storefronts — with the results attached.

For merchants, that means judging a partner on evidence instead of a sales page: browse real builds in your category and budget, then reach out directly. For builders, it means one profile that keeps working after the project ships.

No commissions, no pay-to-rank placements. The best work rises because people save and follow it.
