Custom domain setup puts your store on a domain that carries your brand instead of its myshopify address. It suits new stores getting ready to launch, merchants moving a domain from another platform and anyone whose domain shows security warnings or the wrong site. Every Shopify store starts on a myshopify address. Setup connects a domain you own, so that is the address shoppers see. If the domain is registered elsewhere, Shopify can connect domains from some registrars automatically; otherwise the developer edits the DNS records at your registrar, pointing the A and AAAA records for the root domain and the www CNAME record to Shopify. Shopify then issues a free SSL certificate. A domain bought through Shopify, or transferred to it, is Shopify-managed, so its DNS is handled in your admin. The final step is setting your primary domain so other addresses redirect to it.
The changes themselves take little time. Waiting for DNS to spread across the internet and for Shopify to issue the SSL certificate can take longer, and the store may not load on the new address straight away. Transfers take longer than connections, and moving a domain from another platform needs care with email records. Agree the timeline and milestones, including when to switch over, with the developer before work starts.
