Shopify has made $100M strategic investment in Klaviyo, an e-commerce marketing automation platform, as per documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. This coincided with the announcement of the platforms strengthening their long-term collaboration. Shopify has decided to make Klaviyo, an important part of the Shopify Ecosystem since 2017, the recommended email solution partner for Shopify Plus, the premium merchant plan and also grant early access to in-development Shopify features.

According to businesswire.com, Shopify and Klaviyo have together helped brands such as Loeffler Randall, OSEA and Glossier to establish themselves as an independent business and build relationships with their customers.

Klaviyo is a shining example of the outsized impact Shopify’s app and partner ecosystem can have on the next generation of commerce solutions for independent brands.

Helping Independent Brands

“Our goal has always been to understand our customers (and their biggest challenges) and build the most loved product that solves those challenges,” said Andrew Bialecki, co-founder and CEO of Klaviyo.

“Partnerships with leading platforms like Shopify that share our values and mission are crucial to how we help solve those challenges creators and brands face. We’re excited about what this continued partnership represents for our customers,” he added.

“Klaviyo is a shining example of the outsized impact Shopify’s app and partner ecosystem can have on the next generation of commerce solutions for independent brands,” said Harley Finkelstein, President of Shopify.

“Klaviyo has become invaluable to hundreds of thousands of merchants to help them better understand their customers and engage them in highly personalized ways across so many touchpoints. Klaviyo’s success has been astounding, and we’re excited to take this next step in our already robust partnership to make it even easier for Shopify merchants to grow their businesses,” he further said.

Big Moves

Klaviyo is the latest addition is the string of investments and acquisitions by Shopify aimed at broadening its reach. In July, the Ottawa-based company completed the acquisition of Deliverr, a logistics startup. The $2.1 billion acquisition is the largest purchase in the history of Shopify. The company even invested in Single, a music and video application. In September 2021, Shopify invested and announced a partnership with Yotpo, a firm which provides marketing products and tools for consumer sellers. It even injected capital into startup Crossing Minds which offers a platform to deliver “personalized experiences” without using personal data.

Last month, Shopify laid off 10% of its global workforce, around 1000 employees. CEO and founder Tobi Lütke said that he misjudged the pandemic-driven e-commerce boom, however, the “bet didn’t pay off”. The company reported a net loss of $1.2 billion for Q2 2022. It even warned shareholders that inflation might impact earnings throughout the rest of the year.

Klaviyo: A Short Profile

The Boston-based company which was established in 2012, integrates with existing platforms in order to automate sending of text messages and emails to customers. Klaviyo can help businesses set up triggers for messages regarding product recommendations, abandoned carts and much more. The customer platform of Klaviyo brings customer journey data together under one solution and then makes this data available and actionable to the marketers. This helps merchants to acquire and retain customers on their own terms. Klaviyo’s software integrates with e-commerce platforms like Stripe, BigCommerce, Magento, WooCommerce and more than 220 apps that merchants want to be connected with. Though there is no dearth of marketing automation companies, Klaviyo has stood out by reaching more than 100,000 paying customers which include Solo Stove, Citizen Watches, Unilever and Dermalogica.
